If when we have plants in our garden, we need compost, a perfect nutrient rich food for them to grow. Either you may buy compost from nursery around you or you may prepare your own compost from kitchen waste so that you directly help save the environment by not polluting.
Here I follow Stonesoup's TE composter process in order to prepare my compost, from kitchen waste.
As a starting point, lets see how to get the compost maker powder which is an essential mix for the process. This mix particularly is used to absorb the moist and excess water in the kitchen waste that we throw into the compost bin.
Lets go through the steps on how to get this compost mixer.
1. You need a bucket to prepare the mix. I use a plastic one, 10L capacity, 60cms height, 40cms diameter (approximately)
2. When you buy TE composter, you'll automatically receive this compost maker brick. You can get it separately too. I bought this from stonesoup web site.
3. Remove the brown cover and place the brick inside the bucket (horizontally). FYI - I cut the brown paper into small pieces and throw into the composter bin.
4. Add 1L water as per suggestion but I added around one-and-half litres of water. This is the initial stage (below) around 8am.
5. Intermediate update around 10.30am where the brick absorbs the water as well grow in size.
6. After 4 hours this is the status of the cocopeat brick.
7. You just need to crush this soaked brick that automatically breaks into powder. Just a gentle crush is very much enough, no force is essential.
8. You also need a air tight container in order to store the compost maker powder. I used this one, 50 cms height, 30cms diameter approximately.
9. Transfer the powder from the bucket to this air tight container.
Every time you pour kitchen waste into the composter bin, you need to topup a layer of this powder too.
